Meet the Maker: Axe To Grind Foods

Axe to Grind Foods is located in Middle Sackville and joined the Wolfville Farmers' Market as a vendor in 2018. You can find Cynthia's delicious products at WFM2Go and during the Saturday Farmers' Market. Cynthia sells a wide variety of spices, popcorn toppings and drink rimmers but the signature product is highly curated spice blends and spice rubs.

Starting from the beginning....

Cynthia is a competitive axe thrower and Axe to Grind started as a fundraiser for Canada's National Double Bit Axe Throwing Team. It has grown to be a full business that still donates a portion of proceeds to the National Team. Cynthia has culinary training and ran an organic butcher shop when she lived in Toronto. She has also been a consultant to other butcher shops. Moving back to the Maritimes to "grow old with fresh air and great people", she has reignited her passion for spices with this business.

Why does she do what she does?

The aim for Cynthia's small business is to support people to create simple meals that taste great and will be welcome leftovers. She supports our growers who have a vast knowledge of recipes and combinations of flavors to get the most out of your market purchases. She believes that we have the ability to be more self sufficient on so many levels and that when you ask your farmers about what they grow and understand the challenges they face, you can't help but find yourself being less wasteful.

Here's what a customer had to say about their spice blends

"Some of my favorite spices and blends. Makes me feel like I am actually a decent cook. Avoided cooking prior to using these blends just because I was never sure what spices to use, and these blends solved my problem. Always a delicious end result using Axe to Grind Blends, the only spices you will now fine in my cupboards!" - Lisa T

🎁 Cynthia has a gift for you 🎁

Here's a recipe she loves to use: her "Sweet and Savory" Rub or its "Sugar-free equivalent "Memphis Rub".

I toss a couple of teaspoons of rub with oil on chicken wings, drumsticks, or use as a rub to make pulled pork or spare ribs and toss it into an air fryer or oven. Flip it over halfway through cooking and enjoy when it is done. Super easy, no spicy heat (so it is family-friendly) and super tasty!
